It’s probably no surprise that Ukraine is one of the best places to look for a software development company for nearshoring or outsourcing. Ukrainian software developers offer world-class service on par with cost-efficiency, that’s why they are so loved by foreign clients. (By the way, we’ve recently published an article with predictions for IT outsourcing in Ukraine for 2021.)

However, it’s not only outsourcing that Ukraine is popular for — there are quite a few software development companies that have developed their own top-tier products for both domestic and international markets. Let’s take a look at some of the most prominent ones!

1. Grammarly

Grammarly was founded by Max Lytvyn, Dmytro Lider, and Alex Shevchenko in 2009. The company’s main goal was to help people communicate more effectively. At first, Grammarly targeted students but soon saw the potential of using its product in all communicational circumstances — from everyday correspondence to academic writing.

Today, over 30 million people around the globe use their proprietary AI-powered product to check, correct, and perfect their writing. Grammarly offers a simple, real-time interface that works via multiple channels — a web-based editor, desktop interface, a Microsoft Office add-in, mobile keyboard, and, of course, their popular browser extensions.

As of 2021, Grammarly has over 400 team members, 2000 institutions and enterprise clients, and over 30 thousand daily active users.

Throughout the company’s life, Grammarly received over $200 million in funding, mainly from General Catalyst.

2. MacPaw

MacPaw is one of the leading software development companies in Ukraine that creates services and apps for macOS and iOS. It was founded in 2008 by Oleksandr Kosovan (at that time he was a mere undergraduate student at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute!). MacPaw’s first product was a software cleaning tool CleanMyMac that is still the company’s main product nowadays. MacPaw was bootstrapped (didn’t tap any external financial support), and its founder Kosovan wrote the first code himself.

Today, MacPaw has offices in Kyiv and California and is a well-known software development company around the world.

P.S. MacPaw also writes an insightful blog for Apple users, so if you want to improve the efficiency of your Mac or just learn something new in the realm of tech — consider checking it out.

3. Playtika

Another stellar software development company that has three offices in Ukraine is Playtika, the world’s largest Social Casino games company. It was founded in 2010 in Israel and has since become a pioneer in the games industry.

Playtika has developed two dozens of free-to-play casino games such as House of Fun, Bingo Blitz, and Caesars Casino.

Today, there are over 3.7 thousand employees at Playtika, 19 office locations around the world, and over 35 million monthly active users (even more than at Grammarly 😉).

Genesis focuses on a few major business verticals — mobile apps, digital media, and e-commerce (classifieds — such as Jiji, the largest Nigerian classified ads site).

5. Readdle

Readdle is one of the top Ukrainian mobile application development companies. It was founded in 2000 by Denis and Igor Zhadanov to allow reading books on iPhones via the Safari browser.

Readdle’s most popular products are Scanner Pro, PDF Expert, Spark (email app), Documents (Finder for iOS), Fluix (B2B workflow automation and document management tool), and Calendars 5 (mobile calendar and planner). Their apps have won numerous awards and have been downloaded over 150 million times globally.

Today, Readdle has over 190 employees and operates offices in Ukraine and Germany.
